Neolithic Era of Korea

It was an era of human existence in the Korean Peninsula for which written records did not exist. Seeds for the famous ceramics of Korea were planted in this time period.

Jeulmun Pottery Period
(8000–1500 BC)

Comb-patterned pottery, 40th century BC


Jeulmun-type pottery is typically cone-bottomed and incised with a comb-pattern appearing circa 6,000 BC in the archaeological record. This type of pottery is similar to the Siberian style of pottery, suggesting an interaction between the two cultures.

Mumun Pottery Period
(1500-300 BC)

Storage Vessel, 8th century BC

Mumun-type pottery emerged approximately 2000 BC and is characterized as large, undecorated pottery, mostly used for cooking and storage.
